Three Short Disturbances

These three short pieces are less melodic and more dissonant than most of Matt’s other music.

The first piece, Apprehension, starts quietly with a texture of string tremolos and trills, and gradually wavers around in pitch. As the loudness increases, there are flourishes from the woodwinds, and monotonous murmurings in the brass. A sombre solo violin slowly falls into tune, as the rest of the orchestra swells in final chromatic rise.

Eavesdropping has a more mischievous quality, suggesting a character sneaking around in places they shouldn’t be. The piece has sequences of diminished chords that give dark tone, while the melodies are predominantly played by lower register instruments such as the cello, bassoon and trombone.

Interference is an exploration of the more forceful end of the orchestra. It uses blaring trombones and horns, along with piercing bursts of energy from the high woodwinds. The final section increases the action with tom-toms, congas and a bass drum driving the music forward.
