Theme and Variations
Theme and Variations is a large work that is inspired by pieces in a similar form by Sergei Rachmaninov. It is common to write variations on a theme by another composer, but in this case, the theme is original. This theme was kept as simple as possible to allow for the greatest variety of variation.
The variations range from dramatic and vigorous, to tranquil and joyful. Each variation has a different orchestration, and in many cases, greatly altered melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. The music will not be described in great detail here, but highlights include the beautiful Maestoso variation and the extravagant finale!
