Starlight
Starlight is a very relaxed piece, portraying a nighttime scene. It is written for the somewhat unusual combination of bassoon and strings. Contrary to the stereotypical image of the bassoon plodding away near the bottom of the orchestra, the instrument is predominantly heard in its beautiful upper registers.
The piece uses harmonies inspired by jazz music, with particular use of added 9th chords to give a luscious timbre. The strings are muted throughout, bringing a softer, silky tone. The music also incorporates many moments of silence, denoting the stillness of the night sky.
