Shooter Game
Shooter Game is collection of music that is designed to be played interactively in a video game. It was composed in such a way that the sections can be looped indefinitely, and each section can flow into the next, depending on the actions of the player. The game consists of a controllable soldier, and the landscape features a forest, a stream, a bridge, a large house, and a small dilapidated house.
The first two sections are heard when the soldier is in the forest. Both sections share the same woodwind and brass melodies, although the timpani and strings are only heard when the soldier starts to run. The third section is played when the soldier fires his gun repeatedly. The music becomes more rhythmic and aggressive, with the use of brass stabs, and a snare drum to give a military feel. Various instruments take the lead, and this was randomised in the implementation of the audio in the game, to reduce the fatigue of a short loop being played over and over.
The fourth and fifth sections were written as transitions between the forest music and the house music. As before, when the soldier is running, additional instruments are used to create a thicker texture. The sixth and seventh sections are played when the soldier is in the large house. The house is cold and dark, so a sinister mood is created through the use of fragmented melodies and high pitch string harmonics. When the soldier is running, a metronomic rhythm is created by the strings being played with the back of the bow (col legno), and accentuated by percussion, including two timpanists. The final section is heard when the soldier fires his gun in the house. The music is similar to that in the penultimate section, except it is louder, and includes a variety of brass effects, such as slides and flutter-tounging.
