Shadows of Time

Shadows of Time was a commission by the UWE Symphony Orchestra, and it received its premiere at Bristol Cathedral in March 2013. The title portrays the dark mood of the composition (hence shadows), while at the same time nostalgically reflecting on the music of the early 20th Century. The piece has a number of influences, namely Gershwin for the harmonic style, and Ravel for the orchestral textures. Stylistic similarities with film music are also present, particularly those of black and white films of the 1930s and 1940s. Rich harmonies and impressionistic textures prevail throughout the composition, and this is clearly demonstrated in the build-up of colour at the start of the piece.

Following this introduction are two contrasting main themes. The first has a dark and brooding mood, with a lyrical melody characterised by wide intervals and numerous modulations. A short and tranquil interlude leads to the second theme, which is first heard in the string section. This is more light-hearted than the first, and its style is defined by the use of jazz inspired harmony. This section is then followed by an expressive development of the first theme, building to a triumphant rendition of the second theme by the whole orchestra. Shadows of Time concludes with a sombre echo of the introduction, before rising up to a sonorous final chord.
