Parting in The Square

Parting in The Square could be described as a piece of incidental film music, and overall, it has a sombre mood. The main theme is first heard on the solo cello with a simple string accompaniment, and the texture gradually builds as the rest of the orchestra expands on the initial theme. There are occasional moments when the music turns to a major key, but soon after, there is an even more sombre and reflective section, which is led by a piano solo.

Following this, there is a haunting oboe theme, backed by rich chords in the string section. This builds to a repeat of the main theme, this time played by the horns, with a fuller orchestral accompaniment. The woodwind adds rhythmic interest to the otherwise slow moving harmonies. In the final section, the harp, piano, and tubular bells sound together with an eerie toll. The solo cello returns for one last phrase, which evokes the tone at the beginning of the piece.
