Metropolis

Metropolis depicts the hustle and bustle in a city from another time; where futuristic buildings sit side by side with old shops and market stalls.

The music is bright and cheery, and has a simple chord sequence that is repeated numerous times, but with different orchestral textures each time. This represents the people of all walks of life that reside in the city. A sense of movement is maintained throughout the piece with a strong rhythmic pulse and frequent compound time signature changes.

Much of the music rests on top of an Eb pedal note that creates a drone-like effect, suggestive of more ancient music and the old parts of the metropolis. This is further reinforced through use of instruments such as the tambourine, which is often found in ancient music.
